About Child Aware

HISTORY

To advance the National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children 2009-2020, the Australian Government provided funding for Child Aware projects under the umbrella of a ‘Child Aware Approaches National Initiative’.

The overarching aim of the Child Aware Approaches National Initiative is to embed and promote Child Aware Approaches across organisations, communities, business and governments to address risk factors for child abuse and neglect, putting the child at the centre and improving the safety and wellbeing of Australia’s children.

Projects include:

  • Child Aware Approaches Conferences 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019

Aim: to showcase and disseminate knowledge about current research and innovative practices to address risk factors for child abuse and neglect.

Lead agency: Families Australia

  • Child Aware Local Initiative

Aim: to establish Child Aware Local Communities (2013-2015) in each State and Territory to develop local plans of action to promote, and act on, children’s issues.

Lead agencies: Families Australia and Australian Centre for Child Protection, University of South Australia

  • Child Aware Good Practice Guide and Principles

Aim: to highlight promising practice and innovative resources from Child Aware Approaches Conference, develop child aware principles to promote child awareness and child sensitive practice across policies, procedures, governance and service delivery, and disseminate via Child Aware website and the Child Family Community Australia website.
